Equality wins once again! Virginia Democrat Danica Roem defeated a long-time Republican state house incumbent to become the state's first openly transgendered house member. This is not only a victory for Virginia, but a victory for our nation during one of the most tumultuous times in American political history. Delegate-elect Roem fired up the audience this past August while attending "Out for Pete" here in Montgomery County. It was her intelligence, her drive, and her grit that made this victory possible. Pete and Duane would like to send the sincerest congratulations and best wishes to what will be the start of a historic career of public service for Danica. Her victory tonight is a reflection of our values of diversity here in Montgomery County; values I will fight for and uphold if elected as your District 1 council member to preserve every citizen's rights.
